Hans would risk hiding a Jew because he knew it was the right thing. He wasn't accepted into the Nazi party and knew that he would never be, so he might as well go ahead and do what he knew was right.

Hans owes a debt to the Jew's father. Hans is also not a man to let as debt go unpaid. Hans feels a sincere longing to help repay this man for how his father had saved him in the Great war.

Because his father saved Hans' life by volunteering him to write letters for their commander and if he would've went to battle with the rest of them he would've died. So this is his way of paying back his debt.

Hans made a promise to the family of the man who saved his life. He told them that if they ever needed anything, to let him know and he would do it. He couldn't go back on his word, and it was the one way he could pay tribute to his exceptional friend from war.

Hans is risking hiding Max in his home because of Max's deceased father. While they were in the war together, his father volunteered Hans to do a task that involved writing letters instead of going to battle that day. Nobody returned from the battle.

The reason why Hans would risk hiding a Jew, was because this Jew was not just any one person. Hans had made a promise to his friend's wife to help her with anything she needed to be helped with.

Hans risked hiding a Jew because he knew what Hitler was doing to the Jews was wrong. I feel like he felt like it was the least he could do for the Jews. He also did it because he felt like he owed a debt to Max's dad.
